Skin Cancer Q & A

What is skin cancer?

Skin cancer causes abnormal skin cells to grow and multiply rapidly. The most common type of cancer, skin cancer can appear nearly anywhere on your body. Repeated sun exposure is the most common cause, but genetics and underlying skin conditions can also increase your risk. With early intervention, most skin cancers are treatable.

Are there different types of skin cancer?

The three most common types of skin cancer are:

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC)
Basal cell carcinomas develop due to repeated sun exposure. The most common type of skin cancer, BCC lesions tend to form on the face, head, neck, and chest. While BCCs rarely metastasize (spread) to other areas of the body, they can damage your skin and internal tissues. Most BCCs appear as small red bumps or open sores.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)
The second most common type of skin cancer, SCC is more aggressive than BCC. These pearly bumps or flat, scaly sores can penetrate the skin’s deeper tissues. Without early treatment, SCCs can grow large and spread to other areas of the body.

Melanoma
Melanoma is the most aggressive and dangerous type of skin cancer. The cancer develops in melanocytes, the cells that produce pigment in your skin. Most melanomas form inside moles. While most moles are benign (noncancerous), new growth, color changes, and irregular borders are telltale signs of melanoma.

A proper diagnosis is essential to effectively treat skin cancer. Your provider at Aesthetix Skin & Surgery performs a comprehensive skin cancer exam to detect cancerous lesions and recommend the appropriate treatment.

How can I prevent skin cancer?

The most common cause of skin cancer is sun exposure. You can reduce your risk of skin cancer by:

  • Limiting your time in the sun
  • Avoiding tanning beds
  • Applying sunscreen with SPF 50+
  • Wearing sun protection, such as wide-brimmed hats and long-sleeves

The American Cancer Society recommends scheduling a skin cancer screening if you’re between ages 20 and 40. Individuals over age 40 should have comprehensive screenings annually.

What are the treatments for skin cancer?

Aesthetix Skin & Surgery offers two effective skin cancer treatments:

Photodynamic therapy
Photodynamic therapy is a light therapy that targets precancerous lesions. The noninvasive treatment helps prevent precancer from evolving.

Mohs surgery
Mohs surgery primarily treats BCCs and SCCs, but it can also target certain melanomas. The procedure involves removing thin layers of a cancerous lesion and examining them under a microscope until there are no cancer cells left.
